Fillings Post-Operative Care

After Your Crown or Bridge Placement

You have just had a crown or fixed bridge cemented at Hutchinson Family Dental. These restorations replace missing tooth structure or missing teeth and are designed to function naturally and last for many years when cared for properly.

Please follow the instructions below to help protect your restoration and support long-term success.

Chewing and Eating

Do not chew hard foods on the restored tooth or teeth for the first 24 hours. The cement requires up to 24 hours to fully mature and reach optimal strength.

Avoid aggressive chewing habits. Do not chew ice or other hard objects. Avoid very sticky foods such as hard candies or caramels, as these can dislodge or damage crowns and bridges.

Sensitivity After Treatment

It is normal for the restored tooth to feel sensitive to hot and cold for up to six weeks. This sensitivity should gradually improve. If sensitivity lasts longer than six weeks, please contact our office for evaluation.

Daily Care and Prevention

To help extend the life of your restoration and prevent decay or gum issues:

  • Brush and floss after eating and before bedtime
  • Use a floss threader to clean underneath and around bridges and crowns
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene habits at home

Ongoing Dental Visits

Continue scheduling regular six-month dental examinations. Routine visits allow us to detect small problems early, when they are easier to correct. Delaying professional care is one of the most common reasons restorations fail and require replacement.

When to Call Our Office

Contact us immediately if you notice any of the following:

  • Movement or looseness in the restoration
  • Sensitivity to sweet foods
  • A strange or unpleasant taste near the restoration
  • Breakage or chipping of the restoration
