After Your Dental Implant Placement
You have just had a dental implant placed at Hutchinson Family Dental. Dental implants act as a substitute for a natural tooth root, providing a stable foundation for a crown, bridge, or denture. Following these post-operative instructions is critical to support proper healing and long-term implant success.
Medication and Pain Management
It is recommended that you take pain medication within one hour of leaving our office. Take 800 mg of ibuprofen (four 200 mg tablets) three times a day for three days to help prevent swelling and discomfort.
If antibiotics were prescribed, take them exactly as directed and complete the full course.
Swelling and Bleeding
Swelling is normal after implant surgery and typically peaks within two to three days. Use ice packs on the affected area for the first 24–48 hours, applying for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. After 48 hours, warm towels may be used with the same timing. Elevate your head with pillows when resting to help reduce swelling.
Some bleeding is normal. If bleeding becomes excessive or your mouth fills rapidly with blood, bite down on gauze placed directly over the surgical area for 30 minutes. If excessive bleeding continues, contact our office.
Oral Care and Activity
Limit physical activity for the first few days following surgery.
After the first day, gently resume brushing your teeth. Avoid brushing around the surgical site for three days. Warm salt water rinses can be used after meals to aid cleaning and healing. Use one-half teaspoon of salt mixed into a glass of warm water.
Avoid using straws, smoking, or vigorously rinsing your mouth for the first few days, as these actions can disrupt healing. Do not rinse or spit on the day of surgery.
Diet Guidelines
For the first 24 hours, follow a liquid or soft food diet such as soups, yogurt, or mashed potatoes, and avoid hot foods and beverages. Avoid smoking and alcohol for two weeks following surgery.
Gradually introduce solid foods as you feel comfortable. Do not chew directly on the implant site until it has fully healed.
