Occlusal Guard Care Instructions

After Your Occlusal Guard Fitting

You have just had your occlusal guard fitted and delivered at Hutchinson Family Dental. Please follow the care instructions below to help prolong the life of your guard and ensure it functions properly.

What to Expect

Expect increased salivation for the first 10–15 days. This is normal and will subside as your body adjusts to wearing the guard.

If you experience jaw pain or muscle soreness, please contact our office. In some cases, occlusal guards can contribute to muscle spasms or increased clenching and may require adjustment.

Over time, your guard may discolor or show signs of wear. This is normal. When this occurs, a new guard can be fabricated if needed.

Daily Care Instructions

Wear your occlusal guard every night as directed.

Each morning, remove the guard and brush it using a dedicated toothbrush under cool water or with a mild disinfecting soap that does not contain abrasive particles. Do not use toothpaste or alcohol-based cleaners.

Always store your guard in its protective container when not in use.

Bring your guard to your six-month cleaning appointments so we can remove any tartar buildup or run it through our sterilization machine.
