Post-Op Instructions Following Oral Surgery

After Your Extraction

You have just had a tooth extracted at Hutchinson Family Dental. The following information and instructions will help you attain a full recovery.

Immediate Care and Bleeding Control

A piece of gauze has been placed over the extraction site. Bite down firmly on the gauze for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the gauze and replace it with a new piece. If bleeding continues, apply additional gauze and repeat as needed.

It is normal for saliva to be slightly streaked with blood for up to one day. If abnormal bleeding occurs, place a piece of gauze or moist cotton over the extraction site and apply pressure for 15 minutes.

If bleeding continues, wrap a moist black tea bag in gauze and place it over the area. Bite down firmly for 30–60 minutes. If bleeding does not stop, contact our office immediately.

Swelling, Activity, and Comfort

Apply cold towels or an ice pack to the outside of your face near the extraction site for 15 minutes, then remove for 15 minutes. Continue alternating in this pattern for the first four hours after surgery. Always wrap ice packs in a cloth before applying.

Swelling may occur and can increase for up to 72 hours after the procedure. This is normal and should not cause alarm.

Take it easy for the next day or two. Avoid lifting, exercising, or activities that raise your blood pressure, as these can prevent proper clot formation.

Oral Care and Healing

Do not brush the teeth adjacent to the extraction site until the following day. Beginning the morning after surgery, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water made with 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of water. Repeat several times daily.

Avoid mouth rinses containing alcohol for five days after surgery. Keep your fingers and tongue away from the extraction site.

Do not smoke, spit forcefully, drink carbonated beverages, or use straws for the next 7–10 days, as these actions can disrupt healing.

Pain Management and Diet

Take prescribed medications as directed. If no prescription medication was provided, take 800 mg of ibuprofen (four 200 mg tablets) three times a day as needed for pain. Do not take aspirin.

A liquid or soft food diet is recommended for the first 24 hours. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
