Adjusting to Your New Partial Denture
New partial dentures always feel unfamiliar at first. Several days or even a few weeks may be needed before they feel natural in your mouth. This adjustment period is normal.
Common Early Concerns
- Sore spots are common after wearing your dentures for 24 hours
- These areas can be adjusted and relieved at your next appointment
- A follow-up visit about seven days later usually resolves any remaining sore areas
- Chewing may feel uneven or uncomfortable at first
- We will adjust the bite after 24 hours and again after about one week as the dentures settle
Daily Care and Handling
- Remove your dentures at night to allow your tissues to rest
- Store dentures in water while not in use to prevent warping
- Denture soaks may be used as directed
- Clean dentures with a denture brush and mild soap
- Avoid toothpaste or abrasive cleaners
- Brush your gums once daily with a regular toothbrush to keep them clean and healthy
- Use fluoride toothpaste for your natural teeth
Long-Term Oral Health
When teeth are missing, jaw bones and gums naturally shrink over time, sometimes up to 1/32 of an inch per year. Because of this:
- Dentures and oral tissues should be evaluated at least every six months
- Refitting may be needed to maintain proper fit and function
- Wearing an ill-fitting partial denture for too long can lead to bone loss and oral disease
We will let you know when adjustments or refitting are necessary to protect your oral health.
